Family Poems - Sentiments That Will Get You, Right Here

!±8± Family Poems - Sentiments That Will Get You, Right Here

What's more suave than a Shakespeare sonnet, a Robert Frost fable, or a lyrical Lord Byron love song? Family poems, written from the heart!

How many special occasions are there in a year, and out of those, how many times do you give someone a card with just the greeting of the day? Those are a last ditch effort to save your bacon, when you can't come up with a rhyme of your own.

Come on, now. Family poems aren't War and Peace, you know. If you sharpen that #2 and put some effort into it, an amorous pair or eight pairs of rhyming lines could earn you enough brownie points to cancel out having left the toilet seat up. Once. Maybe.

With all the simple graphics programs available, often for free, or for a free trial download over the Internet, even children can create top of the line greeting cards for every occasion and the most obscure or unusual recipient. Like the dog. Nothing says "Happy Bark Day" like a precious poem penned by a primary school poppet.

Children love rhymes, and the shorter the sentences, the sooner they get to the fun sounds. Remember how they were fascinated with board books that you read to them when they were toddlers? It's just a short step from that humble beginning, to writing family poems of their own.

The effort they put into it is the real treasure, and lines that are too long, or mismatched in rhythm, really aren't going to be noticed. Encourage them to choose a subject, and give them complete freedom. So what, if Granma's birthday card is all about her hair dye job that didn't quite work out. It's the thought that counts, right?

And while we're on the topic, when was the last time you actually bought a card that really said what you wanted it to? They're either too generic, a little short on real feeling, or enough to give you insulin shock, they're so sweet. You're much better off to make your own cards, using family poems that can be found in books or on the Internet.

Lest anyone think you're cheap, we suggest a class in something like scrapbooking, one of the most popular pastimes for whole families. Some buttons, pretty print fabric and a little glitter can make a truly unique greeting that will become a family keepsake. You can even make photo frame cards, and slip in a print of the kids. If you've really been bitten by the creative bug, try calligraphy to create an elegant gift that can be framed or mounted on a plaque.

And if you're stuck for inspiration when it comes to the text, there's nothing wrong with a little plagiarism, as long it's for a loved one, and not commercial sale. After all, you wouldn't want the original author coming after you, for their 350-year old copyright. It's easy to exchange names, locations and other details to make a classic poem, your own.

Romance your mate with sweet words, make them laugh with a lopsided limerick. Family poems are a priceless gift. All you need to add is the wrapping!
